Overthinking Erodes Confidence
A Simple Prescription for Action
Sometimes the most effective way to move forward in life isn’t through endless contemplation, but through simple, decisive action.
I had a client who found herself trapped in a loop of overthinking. She’d developed a crush on a close friend, and the thought of taking things further made her freeze in place. Every scenario played out in her mind: What if he doesn’t feel the same? What if it ruins our friendship? How do I even bring it up without making things awkward? Sound familiar?
She was paralyzed by the endless “what ifs,” the mental traffic jam of second-guessing and doubt. Each thought added another layer of hesitation, and the more she thought, the more overwhelmed she became. Overthinking, in this case, wasn’t helping; it was eroding her confidence.
Here’s the thing: sometimes, it’s helpful to slow down, take a breath, and think things through. But with overthinking, the line can get blurry. You get stuck in the weeds, overanalyzing every angle, and you end up frozen.
As we sat in session, about to get on the What If rollercoaster, I stopped her.
“Sometimes I work with clients to slow down and think a little more before taking action, but for you? I’m prescribing action.” I waited for her response.
She gave me a confused look, clearly not sure where I was going with this. So I continued, “Take out your phone.”
She chuckled nervously. “Are you serious?”
“So serious!” I said, smiling. “Pull up the text and write: ‘Want to grab dinner sometime?’”
There was a long pause. Then she smiled and said, “Just sent.”
And that was it. No more overthinking. No more analyzing every possible outcome. She’d taken action—and it worked. They’re still dating today.
The lesson? Overthinking will keep you stuck in place. Confidence isn’t about having all the answers or predicting the future. It’s about taking the next step, no matter how small, even when you don’t have it all figured out.
So, next time you find yourself lost in a mental maze of “what ifs,” take a deep breath—and take action. You’ll be amazed at what a difference it can make.
Let me know if you have any similar experiences, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
